February has Valentine’s Day, but what’s not to love about March? March will be another busy month at the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center, including the Down the Street Bead Show & Sale, Bike Week camping, an Antique Motorcycle Auction and the returning Coin Show & Sale.

The Down the Street Bead Show & Sale starts the month off, returning to the Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3, and from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday, March 4. For an entrance fee of $5, bead lovers and crafters can purchase beads and findings of all varieties, take classes on topics that cover doll-making and soldering, or shop the handmade jewelry from a variety of artists and vendors. ABATE of Florida is organizing Bike Week camping at the Fairgrounds, and gates will be open from noon Friday, March 9, to noon Sunday, March 18. From Wednesday, March 14, through Friday, March 16, the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center will be hosting J Wood and Company’s 25^th annual Antique Motorcycle Auction, where bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts can meet to buy and sell vintage motorcycles. Crafts, RVs and Cats fill February Volusia County Fair and Expo Center Calendar

November’s Volusia County Fair has come and gone, but the Expo Center on S.R. 44 in DeLand knows no downtime, and February 2012 is no exception. From Feb. 1 through 26, the facility is hosting weekly events, including Senior Expo on Feb. 1, the Buckler Craft Fair Feb. 4 and 5, Florida’s RV Sale & Show February 16 - 19 and the Cat Club of Palm Beaches February 25 - 26.

Volusia County Fair & Expo Center is kicking off the month with the West Volusia Senior Expo; it’s an opportunity for visitors to meet local businesses to learn more about their products and services. Seminars, giveaways, health screenings, demos, entertainment and more run from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1. Admission and parking are free.

The Buckler Craft Fair is returning to the Fair & Expo Center from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, and 10 a.m. -4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5. Admission for adults is $6 and free for children. Buckler’s visitors will enjoy free parking; and those who donate a canned good can receive $3 dollars off one adult ticket. Buckler Craft Fair offers patrons a wide variety of merchandise, such as jewelry, furniture, clothing, and toys, plus handmade fudge and gourmet foods. The Florida RV Sale and Show, one of the Florida Trade Association’s most popular RV events, returns from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, Feb. 19. On behalf of the nonprofit Volusia County Fair Association, its board of directors, staff and hundreds of volunteers, thank you for helping make the 2011 Volusia County Fair and Youth Show a hugely successful event to remember.

This year, we welcomed an estimated 180,000 fun-lovers through the gates of the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, which wrapped up Nov. 13. During that time and thanks to the generosity of our patrons, we collected more than 9,000 pounds of food for local food banks, hundreds of pounds of recyclable aluminum cans, supported youth programs like the Future Farmers of American and 4-H, educated local school children about animals and more through pre-fair school tours, and entertained thousands with comedy, music, dance, hypnotists, amazing rides and more.

Fair patrons donate 9,018 pounds of non-perishable food

Ask them and they will give. That’s what Volusia County Fair organizers believed of Fair patrons as they set out to collect non-perishable food items at the fair’s main gates for the 3rd annual Helen Pletersky Food Drive. Little did Fair officials know it would be more than four tons worth of donations.

Monday night at the Fair, visitors were encouraged to bring in two items of food for Second Harvest Food Bank in return for half-priced gate admission. The food was picked up Tuesday and brought to Second Harvest’s warehouse in Daytona Beach Tuesday, and weighed in at 9,018 pounds – a record for the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show food drive.

The items will be distributed to food pantries around Volusia County throughout the upcoming weeks and months, just in time for a high-need holiday season. Second Harvest Food Bank officials said Tuesday the 9,018 pounds of food is enough to feed 300 families of four for three days.

Food bank volunteers from the Girl Scout Troops 449 and 635 in Deltona, and members of the DeLand-based Krewe de Coeur, collected the goods at the south and west entrance gates.

“We’ve been hearing from people that they’re happy to help out,” said Debbie Johns, Krewe de Coeur member and Second Harvest Food Bank volunteer. “Not only do they feel good about giving, but get a discount on admission in return. Everybody wins.”

Hypnotist Steve Bayner is putting Volusia County Fair & Youth Show visitors under his power of suggestion during the 2011 Fair.

Once again, Bayner has brought an entrancing show, named “America’s Best” of its kind, to the TD Bank Center Circle Stage for daily performances Monday through Friday at 7 and 9 p.m.; Saturdays at 5, 7, and 9 p.m.; Sunday Nov. 6 at 2, 7, and 9 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2, 5, and 7 p.m.

In the entertaining, giggle-invoking shows, Bayner puts audience members under hypnosis, and as they fall into a deep state of relaxation, fun ensues that the whole family can enjoy.

‘Tigers in the Woods’ come out and play at Volusia County Fair

A brand-new show has roared into the Volusia County Fair’s entertainment schedule, and crowds are eating it up.The African Lion and Tiger Show, performed by Tigers in the Woods, is a tiger and lion entertainment and educational show that’s new to the Volusia County Fair, but the clan has been entertaining families for 36 years. Owned and operated by the Von Duke Family, Vincent Von Duke leads the half-hour while sidekick Pom Pom narrates.

The Show is appearing in the AgVenture Village by Progress Energy South Gate at the Fair weekdays at 7 and 9 p.m.; Saturdays at 3:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1:30, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Five outstanding high school students win $1,000 scholarship from VC Fair Association

On the stage of the Tommy Lawrence Arena during the opening ceremonies of the 2011 Fair on Thursday, five local high school students were honored by the Volusia County Fair Association with $1,000 college scholarships, which were presented by Association Director and Scholarship Chairman Gene Dulac.
James “Jarad” Dollar, New Smyrna Beach High School, and Samantha McCulley, Pierson High School, each won an Elvin B. Daugharty Memorial Scholarship; Jot Gault, DeLand High School, received the George Wilkins Scholarship; and New Smyrna Beach High School students Shelby Adams and Robert Bratcher each won Volusia County Fair Association prizes.
All applicants for the three scholarship categories (five scholarships totaling $5,000) were required to be graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated support of the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, and must plan to attend college. The winning applicants had impressive grade point averages to boot; all of them boasted GPAs higher than 3.8 and as high as 4.26 on a weighted scale.

The 67^th annual Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, dubbed this year as a “Barnyard Beach Party,” promises to crank up the fun at the Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand from Nov. 3 – Nov. 13, 2011.

General admission to the Fair is $8 for ages 13 and over; $5 for children ages 6 – 12; and children ages 5 and under are admitted free.

Discounted admission tickets and ride wristbands are on sale now at Walgreens stores through midnight Friday, Nov. 4. Prices for the discounted tickets are $6 for adults ages 13 and up (a $2 savings), and $4 for children ages 6-12 (a $1 savings). Children ages 5 and under are admitted free. Bracelets for unlimited rides are $15 at Walgreens through the end of the promotion.

The fair opens at 4 p.m. Nov. 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11; and at 11 a.m. Nov. 5, 6, 8, 12 and 13. The fair remains open until the midway closes, with the exception of Sunday, Nov. 13 when closing is at 9 p.m.

Fair confirms 2011 concerts: Uncle Kracker, Chubby Checker and Craig Campbell

The 67^th annual Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, dubbed this year as a “Barnyard Beach Party,” promises to crank up the fun at the Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand from Nov. 3 – Nov. 13, 2011. This year’s Fair will have a sufficiently party-worthy soundtrack as well, with concerts scheduled with chart-topper Uncle Kracker, the legendary Chubby Checker, and breakthrough country musician Craig Campbell.

Headlining at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, is DJ-turned-beloved rocker Uncle Kracker. Blending rock, rap and country sounds, Mississippi-born musician Matthew Schafer (Uncle Kracker) and his band will perform new music from his most recent release, “Happy Hour,” (Atlantic Records), as well as from his breakthrough two-time platinum “Double Wide” (Lava Records) and others. Uncle Kracker is best known for pop hits that include “Follow Me” (2001), “Drift Away” (2003), and “Smile” (2009). His fifth full-length album, “Postcards from Home,” is due to be released next year.

Legendary singer-songwriter Chubby Checker will get his audience ‘twisting’ in performances at 4 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8. Along with his chart-topping “The Twist” (1958), Checker (born Ernest Evans) also dominated charts in the early 60s with singles such as “Pony Time,” “Let’s Twist Again,” “Jingle Bell Rock” with rock-n-roller Bobbie Rydell, and “Slow Twisting” with R&B Singer Dee Dee Sharp. Proving a classic never dies, in 2008, Checker’s “The Twist” was named by Billboard magazine as the biggest chart hit of all time.

Country music singer Craig Campbell will take the stage at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, and entertain fans. Campbell will croon his debut single, “Family Man” and others from his first self-titled album that debuted in April 2011. “Family Man” has reached the No. 14 spot in the U.S. Country Music Charts. The Nashville-Tenn. native’s star continues to rise with the recent release of his second single, “Fish.”

Elephants, camels and white tigers part of Sept. 18 circus

Elephants, camels and tigers, oh my! Youngsters will thrill to see the many animal stars of the Pages Circus when it returns to the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center for 1 and 4 p.m. performances Sunday, Sept. 18.

The Circus, which originated in Cuba in the 1960s, promises wholesome family fun and featured performances by elephants, white tigers and lions, ponies, and much more. Additional staples of the 1.5-hour event are aerial, juggling and clown acts. Elephant, camel and pony rides also are available during and after the show.

Free children’s tickets (for ages 14 and under) are available at merchant sites throughout the community; adult admission (ages 15 and up) is $15. Volusia County Fair Association board members, Fair Executive Director David C. Viers, County Council Members and Hall Construction (Daytona Beach) representatives broke ground Tuesday morning on a 5,400-square-foot addition to the Hubert S. Talton Building Volusia County Fair & Expo Center (Talton Building), 3150 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

The space added to the Talton building will be used as administrative offices during the annual Volusia County Fair, which is slated this year for Nov. 3 – 13, and as rental space for public use throughout the non-fair seasons. Construction is slated for completed prior to the start of the 2011 Volusia County Fair.

Volusia County Fairgrounds getting WILD in August

There’s no shortage of wild sights to be seen at the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center this August. Between wrestlers, show cats, the Wild West and exotic birds, there are bound to be some squeals, cheers and “ahhs” emanating from the fairgrounds in the coming weeks.

Florida Championship Wrestling (FWC) returns to the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center’s Townsend Hall Wednesday, Aug. 10. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the bell rings at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are available online at www.fcwwrestling.info, or at Buddy’s Home Furnishings (1430 N. Woodland Blvd.) in DeLand. Adult tickets are $20, children’s tickets are $10. Reserved seating also is available for $25 per adult, and $15 for children. Sit Golden Ringside (row 1) for $25 (adults) or $20 (children).

The August 10 wrestling event the only Volusia County stop on the Florida Championship Wrestling’s “Summer Slamarama Tour.” Access includes a meet-and-greet autograph session with RAW stars Alex Riley and Drew McIntyre; eight matches featuring FCW and NXT stars; a Divas Swimsuit Contest; and a Superstar Idol Singing Contest.

They may not “smack down,” but the extraordinary felines of the Tropical Cat Show surely will dominate rings of their own on Saturday, Aug. 20. The event will feature a Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA) all-breed cat show, plus six all-breed and household pet rings, in the fairground’s Townsend Hall. Show hours are from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Adult tickets are $6. Admission is $5 for senior citizens and children ages 6 and older. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The Junior Service League of DeLand will hold its Wild West fundraising event at the fairgrounds Saturday, Aug. 27. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Tommy Lawrence Arena. Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door, and available from active Junior Service League members and at the following DeLand businesses: Giggles & Coos (110 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand), Mainstreet Bank (204 S. Woodland Blvd.) and Quality Quickprint (1441 N. Amelia Ave.).

Flying through the Arena the following day will be the Exotic Bird Show & Mart as it returns for its twice-annual visit Sunday, Aug. 28. Winged wonders will convert the Townsend Building at the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center into a chirping aviary from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The Exotic Bird Fair & Mart will feature vendors selling exotic birds such as canaries, macaws, cockatiels, finches, parrots and many others, as well as bird accessories including cages, toys, stands, perches, dishes, and bird jewelry and clothing.

Ages 10 and under are admitted free, and admission for 11 and older is $5 at the door. The Exotic Bird Fair & Mart is organized by Bird Florida Fair, which has been conducting bird events for 18 years throughout Florida, Virginia and North and South Carolina.

Piccadilly Circus returns to the Fairgrounds July 14

Dubbed "The Fun Circus," the Piccadilly Circus returns to the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center Thursday, July 14 for 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. shows, complete with its clowns, motorcycles, acrobats, elephants, kangaroos and much more.

Known for providing affordable family fun for 25 years, the Piccadilly Circus has distributed coupons for children 13 and under to attend free. At the annual convention of the Florida Federation of Fairs in St. Augustine this May, the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show was once again named a “Blue Ribbon Fair.” This designation shows the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show is a top fair in the state that excels in a rigorous judging process and is an award the Fair has received annually since 2001.

The mission of the Florida Federation of Fairs is to increase the overall quality of Florida's Agricultural Fairs, provide the members the support and guidance needed to enlighten our youth and fairgoers on agriculture, trade, entertainment and the heritage of Florida.

The mandatory livestock exhibitor meeting will be Monday, Sept. 19 for market animal exhibitors; and Tuesday, Sept. 20 for breeding animal and small animal exhibitors.

Exhibitors must attend the Mandatory Livestock meetings to be eligible to show at the Fair. The parent/family pass sign up will be $20, with a limit of four per family. Photos will be taken for ID badges for FFA Advisors and 4H leaders as well. Refreshments will be served.

May is bringing fried frog legs and handmade crafts to the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center in two events Thursday, May 5, and Saturday and Sunday May 14 - 15.

The 20th annual Albert D. Downs Wild Game Feast, presented by the DeLand Breakfast Rotary, is returning to the Tommy Lawrence Arena from 6 - 9 p.m. Thursday, May 5. The event serves up heaping helpings of Southern culinary delights – venison chili, smoked pork, fried rattlesnake, swamp cabbage – in the effort to raise funds for local non-profits and charitable organizations. Over the life of the Wild Game Feast, more than $1 million has been raised through the popular event. Tickets are $50 each and are available online at http://www.wildgamefeast.org/.

A week later, Buckler’s Craft Fair returns from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, May 14 and 15. Exotic birds make inaugural migration to Volusia County Fairgrounds April 3

Winged wonders will convert a portion of the Tommy Lawrence Arena at the Volusia County Fair & Expo Center into a chirping aviary from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, April 3, as The Exotic Bird Fair & Mart makes its inaugural migration to DeLand.

Ages 10 and under are admitted free to The Exotic Bird Fair & Mart, and admission for 11 and up is $5 at the door. Parking at the fairgrounds is free.

100s of RVs return to Volusia County Fair & Expo Center Feb. 24 - 27

The Florida RV Trade Association (FRVTA) Region 4 will return with its Central Florida RV Show at the Volusia County Fair and Expo Center in DeLand from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, February 24 - 27.

Adult admission to the RV show is $5; children 16 and under are admitted free. Seniors receive a $1 ticket discount Thursday, Feb. 24. Parking is free every day.

Nearly 250 units of new and used recreational vehicles (RVs) will be on site for show and sale, including gas and diesel motorized RVs (classes A, B, and C) and towable RVs (travel trailers, folding camper trailers/pop-up campers and more) and representing more than 150 manufacturers and suppliers.

In addition, more than three dozen vendors – RV parts suppliers, storage facilities, holding-tank cleaners, RV insurance providers, campgrounds, and wheelchair-lift retailers – will be promoting their products and services at the four-day event.

According to FRVTA, RV sales typically have been an indicator of the end of a recession as consumers have more confidence in making a major luxury-item purchase.

The Buckler Craft Fair returns for its first of three 2011 Volusia County Fair and Expo Center appearances Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 5 - 6. The event will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is $6 per adult, and children are admitted free. Parking is free.

Confectionary classes Jan. 15 – 16 at the fairgrounds taught by award-winning artists

The Sweet Beginnings Cake Club is sponsoring Volusia County Confectionary Art Classes Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 15 - 16, at the Volusia County fairgrounds, 3150 E. New York Ave, DeLand.

Several teachers will instruct students with hands-on techniques for creating and decorating sweet treats. Teachers include Carol Webb, Mercedes Strachwsky, Lucinda Larson Olds, Geraldine Randlesome, George Reese, Judy Smith, Edna De La Cruz and Lisa Menz.

All of the classes’ teachers are accomplished confectionary artists. Strachwsky of Bake Me a Cake bakery, Altamonte Springs, Fla., recently won the grand prize at the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show & Grand National Wedding Cake Competition.

Registration for the Confectionary Art Classes is open until the classes are filled. Class size is limited, so early registrations are suggested. This year, we welcomed an estimated 177,000 fun-lovers through the gates of the Volusia County Fair, which wrapped up Nov. 14. During that time and thanks to the generosity of our patrons, we collected more than 3 tons of food for local food banks, hundreds of pounds of recyclable aluminum cans, supported youth programs like the Future Farmers of American and 4-H, educated local school children about animals and more through pre-fair school tours, and entertained thousands with comedy, music, dance, hypnotists, amazing rides and more.

Volusia County Fair brings together crafters, historians, and local “piecemakers”

Pay close attention, and through the sounds of screaming teens and smells of fresh cinnamon rolls, you’ll hear the whisper of proud traditions throughout Volusia County Fair.

Though most fairs are known for their delectable eats, free concerts and of course, their hair-raising rides, but the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show’s goal of promoting agricultural, horticulture, creative arts, sciences and providing educational opportunities remains its foundation. It’s been that way since the first Volusia County Fair in 1923.

Near the West Gate, visitors can travel back to simpler times on the farm with the Orey Crippen collection of motors and mills at Antique Gas Station and Blacksmith Shop. Its antique engines, well pumps, tractors, hit-n-miss engines are still running, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers who ensure they do.

Volunteers Leo St. Peter and Meagan Smith of DeLeon Springs, Frank Schuman of DeLand, and Ed Moody of New Smyrna Beach are some of the volunteer crew members who prepare months in advance of the annual fair by repairing, servicing and cleaning the equipment so many enjoy.

Ninety percent of the machines are on loan from Volusia County residents, according to St. Peter, and date as far back as 1929. At 4 p.m. most days of the Fair, visitors will see antique Ford, John Deere, Farmall and Ferguson’s tractors parading through the grounds, with their proud owners atop them. Thirty-five tractors were donated for display throughout this year’s event.

Next door to the Antique Tractor Display, visitors will see the Old Plantation building, which as its name suggests, displays that combine loaned and permanent antiques – including carriages, furniture, looms and more. The impressive collections fill partitioned “rooms” throughout the building.

On the north end of the Old Plantation building sits a small group of crafters, many of whom dressed in period costume, hand-quilting a masterpiece and conversing about their favorite hobby.

Beth Freese of Edgewater, and Ruth Perrenod, Peggy Gannon and Bettijean Meyer of New Smyrna Beach, all members of the Pelican Piecemakers Quilt Guild of New Smyrna Beach, and other members, work on the collective project every day of the fair.

“We want to show how quilts were made and show how things were done back then so kids don’t take it for granted,” said Perrenod. “Quilting is a lost art, and we’re here to promote it.”

Perrenod and her friends estimated it takes 1,000 hours of multiple quilters’ work to complete a queen-sized project. As they demonstrate quilting and chat, they collect donations for tickets as they prepare to draw a winner for a quilt in their next giveaway next March.

Next door to the quilting bunch is a small booth of hand-carved hardwood home-décor items and canes, courtesy of 20-year carver Howard Bergman, of DeLeon Springs. The craftsman transforms chunks of basswood, butternut and buckeye into Celtic love spoons, walking sticks and canes and more.

There’s no shortage of pride, craftsmanship and dedication to history and the arts at the Fair, and the community likely is better for it. Beyond the rides, concerts and food, the strongest traditions continue at the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show.

Sure, there are rides…lots of rides (including the new Super Shot and Scooter bumper cars). But, the Volusia County Fair, which runs Nov. 4 – 14 at the Fairgrounds in DeLand (I-4 exit 118A), features much more than fast-spinning, stomach-dropping machines of adventure. From games to food to entertainment, the fair has something for everyone…of every age.

Visitors can test their skills at more than two dozen games along the fair’s midway area near the east gate. Organizers say the most popular of the kiddy games is the ball toss for goldfish, the long-range basketball throw, Bottle Up, and water guns. Look out for the kids’ games where every player is a winner.

What’s tastier than fair food? Nothing we can think of. Food vendors throughout the fairgrounds are a main attraction of any country fair, and treats this year include funnel cakes, elephant ears, corn on the cob, daiquiris, fried dough, cold drinks, fried Oreos, sausage, cheese steak, sirloin tip dinners, corn dogs and giant fried onions.

Featured musical acts this year are John Michael Montgomery, who will perform in the Tommy Lawrence Arena at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5; Brenda Lee, performing there Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 4 and 7 p.m., and Jason Michael Carroll, on stage in the arena Saturday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. Performances are free with fair admission, and seating is limited.

Dennis Lee (http://www.thedennisleeshow.com/) will perform at the fair’s Center Circle Stage Monday through Friday at 8 and 10 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3, 6, and 8 p.m. Lee brings a high-energy and interactive show that blends music and comedy.

Hypnotist Steve Bayner (http://www.stevebayner.com/) will bring his entrancing show, once named “America’s Best” of its kind, to the Center Circle Stage Monday through Friday at 7 and 9 p.m., Saturdays at 5, 7, and 9 p.m., Sunday Nov. 7 at 4, 7, and 9 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2, 4, and 7 p.m.

On Saturdays at 4 p.m., visitors will hear the roaring engines of 1920s-circa tractors in the beloved tractor parade that will cruise chug through the fairgrounds. This year, the fair will feature 35 tractors from 1929 to more recent models, including Ford, John Deere, Farmall and Ferguson’s.

WillTown, an Orlando-based alternative rock band, will perform originals and cover hits on the Center Circle Stage Saturdays at approximately 10 p.m.

Near the fairgrounds’ south gate, visitors will step into the world of AgVenture Village, featuring the Welde Bear Show and GASCAR animal races. The famous Welde Bear Show (www.bearadiseranch.com) returns with its educational wildlife program, which will feature stars Fred, Ginger, Andy, Carol, Bambi and Bruno.

Weighing in at 800 pounds and 7 pounds, 11 inches in height, Bruno is sure to entertain with his comrades by his side. The Welde Bear Show is a family-owned and operated business based in South Florida, and its stars modeled and participated in numerous Hollywood productions, including Disney’s “Brother Bear” animated movie. The Welde bears will perform weekdays at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30, 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Also in AgVenture Village are the GASCAR animal races, presented by the Great American Petting Zoo, which will feature animals hoofing and waddling their way around a racetrack. Catch the action weekdays at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Near the fairgrounds’ west gate, the fun continues with the Great American Petting Zoo (www.greatamericanpettingzoo.com), which is open for visitation daily until 10 p.m. The no-barrier zoo features llamas, Fallow deer, Bennett wallabies, African pygmy goats, and assorted exotic and domestic goats and sheep.

Adjacent to the petting zoo is the Firefighter Show (http://www.firefightershow.com/) is an interactive show that teaches children the basics of fire safety while allowing them to live the dream of being firefighter trainees. The Firefighter Show will be weekdays at 5 and 7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2, 6 and 8 p.m.

Pine Ridge High junior named 2010 Miss Volusia County Fair

She earned the crown and wore it proudly: Rayna Hirt, 17, a senior at Pine Ridge High, Deltona, Fla., was named Miss Volusia County Fair in the annual contest Thursday, Nov. 4. The event followed the opening ceremonies of the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, which is Nov. 4-14, at the Volusia County Fairgrounds.

Hirt is a dance student in Sanford and is the captain of the Pine Ridge Dance Team. Her post-graduation ambitions include performing on Broadway, attending college and pursuing a Hospitality Management career.

Event sponsors bringing refreshments, educational programs and interactive exhibits will be on-hand at the Volusia County Fairgrounds to share their products and programs with patrons of the 2010 Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, Nov. 4 – 14.

At mobile units throughout the fair, McDonald’s® will offer samplings of its refreshing Frappe’s and Smoothies Monday, Nov. 8, which also is “McDonald’s Family Night.” The $12 ride bracelets good for Monday’s event, (sold until 6 p.m. at the gate), will include a coupon for a Free Happy Meal® with the purchase of a Big Mac® at any participating Volusia County McDonald’s.

Walgreens will have its “Wellness Van” on property from Nov. 8 - 11, while Florida Dairy Farmers will offer milk sampling both Saturdays of the fair, Nov. 6 and 13.

PNC Bank will bring its Mobile Learning Adventure Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 10 and 11. The Mobile Learning Adventure (MLA) is part of PNC’s “Grow Up Great” program, and features activities for parents with children including interactive kiosks, the “What I Want to Be When I Grow Up” photo station, crafts and educational materials.

The Central Florida Community Blood Centers mobile unit will be seeking donors during the non-profit’s Blood Drive, and educating crowds on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13.

Ford will bring its 2011 Explorer and “All Area Access Tour” Nov. 5 – 7, where guests can experience the interactive simulator and new Terrain Management System of the reinvented Explorer.

So, in honor of its young fans, The Volusia County Fair & Youth Show has rounded up its ride deals for this year’s event at Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand, Nov. 4 - 14:

Thursday, Nov. 4: $15 ride bracelets good until the midway closes. Gates open at 4 p.m., midway opens at 5 p.m. (Gate admission bonus: Free gate admission on this opening night of the Fair.)

More than 1,000 animals to be showcased in contests, auctions

Livestock and animal showings and auctions are a staple of the great county fair, and in the case of the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, such events are a tradition that dates back to the first fair in 1923.

More than 1,000 animals are registered for show or auction during the Nov. 4 – 14 Volusia County Fair & Youth Show.

Livestock and poultry are entered into the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show events by members of local Florida Farmers Association chapters, 4-H Clubs throughout Volusia County, other agricultural youth groups, and individuals. The animals are shown by the youth and judged through the Danish System of Judging, which is based upon established standards of quality for each type of product. In this system each exhibit is judged according to how well it meets that standard, rather than how it compares with other exhibits. Blue, Red, White, Blue-Excellent and Red-Good ribbons are distributed.

The Volusia County Fair & Youth Show features animal shows, contests and/or auctions every day of its Nov. 4 – 14 run. Below are the events, times and number of registered animals. All events will be in the Townsend Livestock Pavilion at the Volusia County Fairgrounds:

Thursday, Nov. 4: Breeding swine show at 7 p.m. The show has 29 entries.
Friday, Nov. 5: Breeding ewe show at 7 p.m. The show has 102 entries.
Saturday, Nov. 6: Cross-bred breeding beef shows include European/Continental breeds at 3 p.m. and Florida commercial Brahman influence at 6 p.m. The show has 28 Florida common cows and 30 European/Continental breed entries.
Sunday, Nov. 7: Rabbit and guinea pig contests at 6 p.m. The show has 121 entries.
Monday, Nov. 8: Market lamb show at 7 p.m. The show has 30 entries.
Tuesday, Nov. 9: Market swine show at 7 p.m. The show has 107 entries.
Wednesday, Nov. 10: Market steer show at 7 p.m. The show has 34 entries.
Thursday, Nov. 11: Livestock auction – lamb, steer and swine – at 6 p.m. The auction has 171 entries.
Friday, Nov. 12: Goat showmanship show at 6 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 13: Dwarf and dairy goat show at 11 a.m., meat goat show at 2 p.m., breeding meat goat show at 4 p.m., and meat goat auction at 7 p.m. The shows have 16 market meat goats and 110 breeding meat goat entries.
Sunday, Nov. 14: Poultry contests at 11 a.m. The contests have 250 entries.

Volusia County Fair to feature headlining musical acts

The Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, “Carnival Lights and Country Nights,” will return to the Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand from Nov. 4 – Nov. 14. With 11 days of food, rides, entertainment, youth shows and more, there are countless ways to enjoy the annual festival. Each year, musical guests and entertainment are highlights of the annual Fair, and the 2010 edition is no different.

Headlining at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, will be American country music artist John Michael Montgomery. Having released 11 studio albums, the 45-year-old Montgomery has produced more than 30 singles, including two Billboard Number One Country Singles of the Year: “I Swear” (1994), and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” (1995). Eighteen more of his songs have topped the country music charts, including five that reached the top of the country music charts.

Legendary “rockabilly” country music icon Brenda Lee will perform during two “Senior Day Free Concerts,” at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9. Lee has had 37 chart hits in the United States during the ‘60s, a number surpassed only by Elvis Presley. Lee is best known for her 1960 hit, “I’m Sorry,” and 1958’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Lee recently was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Country music singer Jason Michael Carroll will entertain fans with his unique brand of “Generation Y family man” music Saturday, Nov. 13, during an 8 p.m. performance.

Carroll’s debut album, “Waitin’ in the Country,” has neared a half-million in sales and has spawned three hit singles. His sophomore album, “Growing up is Getting Old,” was released in April 2009.

All concerts during the Volusia County Fair & Youth Show are free with gate admission. Seating is limited, so fans are encouraged to arrive early.

Purchase admission and ride wristbands early. Discounted admission tickets and ride wristbands are on sale from Oct. 1 through midnight, Nov. 5, at 50 Walgreens stores throughout Volusia, Flagler and eastern Seminole Counties.
Free gate admission. Enjoy the Fair with free gate admission its first night, Thursday, Nov. 4. Gates open at 4 p.m.
Ride early. It’s a teenage dream: Wristbands that get you unlimited rides at the Fair! Patrons can get a deal on such hot commodities Monday, Nov. 8, when wristbands will be $12 for the night. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, rides will be only $1 each.
Free concerts. Headlining country acts are a staple of the Volusia County Fair! Beginning Friday, Oct. 1, discounted admission tickets and ride wristbands for the Nov. 4-14 Volusia County Fair & Youth Show, “Carnival Lights and Country Nights,” will be available at more than 50 Walgreens stores throughout Volusia, Flagler and eastern Seminole Counties.

The discounted admission tickets and ride wristbands will be sold at Walgreens stores through midnight Friday, Nov. 5. Prices for the discounted tickets are $6 for adults ages 13 and up (a $2 savings), and $4 for children ages 6-12 (a $1 savings). Children ages 5 and under are admitted free. Bracelets for unlimited rides are $15 at Walgreens through the end of the promotion.
